A couple of days after Mel & Rabin’s wedding, we jumped in a tuk tuk, and headed out to a few different locations for some more portraits…… a post wedding shoot is a great chance for some intimate beautiful portraits of you together without the time constraints of a wedding day. When you have travelled tens of thousands of miles for a wedding, it makes sense to capture some images of you outside the wedding venue…..and that’s exactly what we did……

Come back to see the main event on my blog later this week….

I was completely blown away by Sri Lanka when I visited last month…well I just didn’t expect it to be so unspolit….well, so very lovely really…… it was like India without the poverty and stress. An easier, cleaner, more chilled out version of India.

I had chance to shoot a little personal work whilst I was there and I will let these set the scene for the wedding coming up tomorrow….. this is the West Coast of Sri Lanka, Galle and the surrounding beaches. I am amazed at how quiet it is and I really think they deserve more visitors, post tsunami, although not too many as that’s part of it’s appeal. I stayed at a wonderful place, Leijay Resort, which deserves a post of it’s own, and had a rather unexpectedly sweet time. There were chillis in everything, I travelled everywhere by tuk tuk and spent the best part of 6 days being very ex-pat, drinking tea on the veranda and talking non stop with my fellow photographer Aneta Mak who came along to assist. I saw a snake charmer, a dancing monkey (I couldn’t bring myself to be photographed with it, I’m way too much of an animal lover….but snakes…well snakes are snakes aren’t they?! I like to think they enjoy the music and are kind of dancing or something…..but then I do have an overactive imagination…..) and sea turtles. Oh, the sweet sea turtles….more on those later.

Let’s just say I immediately looked up buying property in Sri Lanka on the web on my return: always the sign of a good trip isn’t it?! Sri Lanka is one of the few places where you can, subject to certain conditions, actually own property as a foreigner. And it is incredibly affordable by Western standards. But I have my hands full with living in 2 countries at once, let alone adding a third into the mix so this is one idea I will be keeping firmly locked up in the fantasy box!

Palm Springs

July 16, 2012

Palm Springs, I adore you! The amazing modernist architecture, the endless blue skies and sunny days, and the great shops and food. I stayed at the lovely Orbit In. There aren’t any pictures of the place itself as I was laid up in bed with a cold, but afterwards I returned and captured a little of it’s magic. So much more there though: a return trip is definitely on the cards….. I’d love to build a modernist inspired villa in Ibiza one day (my own Grand Design…), so perhaps another trip in the name of research?!

Things I Love: The Western Algarve, Portugal

May 7, 2011

I discovered Portugal just last year. Deciding to take a pre wedding season break away from the UK, and away from Ibiza, we rented out our home and headed off to Portugal. We stayed at a yoga and surf camp (which whilst a great experience, reinforced that I am not a camping-kind-of-girl), and discovered the incredible beaches of the Western Algarve. I was totally blown away.

I think it’s really important to take a break from photographing when I am not working and I am not one of those photographers who always carries a camera on them. I think it’s good to really immerse yourself in life and experience the world with all your senses, not through a lens. To give your eyes and your mind a rest, and integrate with the world fully. So usually I leave my ‘proper’ camera behind and take a toy camera instead, a Holga, Diana, Polaroid or even a little digital point and shoot, and only shoot if I happen to feel like it, rather than to document the events of my trip.

However in this instance I was feeling my love affair with my Contax film camera (which I use for my professional work) and decided to experiment with taking it away with me. I am glad I did…the light and the landscape blew me away and when I got the images back from the lab a few weeks later they connected me right back with all that sublime beauty. It was so quiet and the beaches gloriously empty, the food was great, it was super affordable, and when we went back for a more luxe experience later in the summer, the service was great.

I’m going to do a few posts on Portugal. This is my favourite.
